About The Author

Dr. Carole Ferrand earned her BA in English Literature at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. After emigrating to the United States, she obtained her MA and PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Pennsylvania State University.

Dr. Ferrand taught in the Department of Speech Language-Hearing Sciences at Hofstra University in New York for 28 years. Her research and teaching interests focused on the bioacoustic aspects of normal and disordered speech production.

She has authored two widely-used textbooks: “Speech Science: An Integrated Approach to Theory and Clinical Practice” now in its 4th edition, and “Voice Disorders: Scope of Theory and Practice”, now in its 2nd edition.

In 2018 Dr. Ferrand moved to Colorado where she continues to explore bioacoustics in humans as well as in birds. In addition to writing textbooks, she is currently working on a book directed to the general public on the dinosaurian origins of bird song, and the close parallels between human speech and birdsong. Dr. Ferrand enjoys travel, opera, hiking, biking and bird watching. Her interests have taken her to numerous countries throughout the world.
